about

This is a confession. Sorry, mom.

"Blood" is about the 14-year-old insomniac kid I used to be, who was dying to get out of a small town, and would do pretty much anything to feel alive. I used to wait until my mom went to sleep so I could "borrow" the car keys and take my friends on late-night joyrides in her beat up Volvo. For some reason, a LOT of those nights ended with all of us laughing at each other, and bleeding all over a grocery store parking lot, after trying to pull off Jackass stunts in shopping carts. "It's the blood that made us who we are". We definitely learned some lessons and picked up a few scars to remind us, down the road.

There was something important about being an idiot with my friends and screaming EVERY lyric to EVERY song on "Enema of The State" by Blink-182, while we were packed in a soccer-mom Volvo that was towing one of our friends in a Kroger shopping cart behind the car. The fact that we never got caught still blows my mind, but squeaky wheels on grocery carts make a lot of sense.

lyrics

I was alive going down for the summer with my eyes open wide
God knows I tried but I can’t get back the feeling of the very first time
I was that guy switching lanes motherfucker middle finger to the sky
I’m gonna die someday it’ll get me but it won’t be tonight

No one wants to think of me
I’m just a distant memory for the nine to fives
I made so many enemies
You’d think I was a Kennedy but still alive

For the nights I stole my mother’s car
For the year I got my favorite scars
I’m still that motherfucker cuz I’m always getting drunk
Chance we’ll never make it but we’ll never give up
It’s the blood that made us who we are

I’ve been in love, but I never felt as good as I did chasing the sun
Yeah I been in love, but it never looked as pretty as your face throwing up

No one wants to think of me
I’m just a distant memory for the nine to fives
I’ve made so many enemies
You’d think I was a Kennedy but still alive

For the nights I stole my mother’s car
For the year I got my favorite scars
I’m still that motherfucker cuz I’m always getting drunk
Chance we’ll never make it but we’ll never give up
It’s the blood that made us who we are
